MAAE Artists’ Training Workshop
July 21-22, 2008
Application Deadline: Friday, June 20, 2008
The Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education is offering the fifth in a series of hands-on workshops designed to develop the skills of artists and arts educators in presenting educational workshops for teachers and students. Performing and visual artists are invited to apply for this artists’ training workshop, titled “Artist as Teacher,” to be held July 21-22, 2008, at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
This workshop is being offered in partnership with the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Whole Schools Initiative.
A stipend of $250 is available to inpiduals in the performing arts who are selected to participate as a result of the DANA Foundation grant. Visual artists who are selected may take the workshop at no charge.
Funding for the training is provided by a grant from the DANA Foundation.
The goal of the series of workshops is to increase the number of artists included in the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Arts in Education Roster. Schools that engage artists routinely consult the roster for a description of an artist’s skills and a recommendation of the quality of their work in the arts and in education.
During the workshop, participants will learn to plan arts experiences for students and how to lead professional development workshops for teachers. Artists will learn to make connections between their art form and what students must know and be able to do.
Kim Whitt, Director of Arts Education at the Mississippi Arts Commission, will lead an arts experience. M. J. Etua, theatre teacher at Louisville High School and past president of the Mississippi Theatre Association, will conduct a professional development session.
For information about the workshop, please visit the MAAE website at http://www.msartsalliance.com. The website page describes the workshop and the application process. The page also contains links to the on-line application form in addition to forms in pdf and Word formats.
Deadline for submitting applications is June 20, 2008. The MAAE will consider complete applications that are submitted by the stated deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
The final workshop in the series will be offered October 7-8, 2008, and will be held at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs. Application deadline is September 12, 2008.
