Individual Events Festival (IEF)

Institutional Eligibility:

  1. A participating school must be a registered organizational member of MTA.
  2. A school may enter two (2) students or teams in each event. There will be ten events.
  3. Along with the institutional registration fee, a participating school must pay $10 for each event slot.

 Individual Eligibility:

  1. Every student that participates in the MTA Individual Events Festival must be a member of MTA, through a participating school, which is an organizational member of MTA.
  2. Each student member must be enrolled in a participating school, which is an organizational member of MTA.
  3. A student may enter only two (2) events. EX. A student may be an entry in Monologue Acting and an entry in Duet Acting.
  4. Any violation of these rules will automatically disqualify the school's entry.

Eligibility requirements for all students:

  1. Each school that participates must fill out a registration form.
  2. The I.E. Coordinator, David Boone (davidpboone@go.com ) should be contacted if a school needs to make a substitution.
  3. Each request is considered on an individual basis.
  4. Each application will be accepted on first come first served basis until the conference deadline of January 5, 2006.
  5. Incomplete applications will not be accepted, students must identify the author of their piece and the selection itself. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.
  6. Students competing in monologue events, duets, scene performances, and musical theatre events will be asked to stay in the competition classroom until the event is complete. This does not apply to duet scenes.

The following events will be offered:

* A STUDENT MAY NOT ENTER THE SAME EVENT IN THE SAME DIVISION MORE THAN ONCE.

* CHOICE OF MATERIAL: All entries should be suitable for high school students and their community with regard to language and subject matter. It is strongly suggested that no material come from sketch comedy (such as Monty Python or Saturday Night Live skits.). Students and sponsors are encouraged to make selections from more fully developed dramatic sources. Student written work is accepted. If a play or individual event piece is student written a signed statement from the teacher must be attached to a typed copy of the work indicating it is the product of that particular student.

* TIME LIMITATIONS : Time limits vary for the individual events. Failure to comply will result in automatic disqualification from a Superior rating. There is no bottom time, but directors/sponsors are encouraged to help students select pieces that are not too short. TIME LIMITS DO NOT INCLUDE INTRODUCTION. Students may not start their performances over unless both judges agree that there is a legitimate distraction in the room. In the event that a student starts over without legitimate cause, they are allowed to continue, but the stopwatch will continue to run.

* ENTRY FEES : $10 PER STUDENT PER INDIVIDUAL EVENT. For Example: Students registering for the Duet Acting Competition pay $10 each, or $10 for that event. The Ensemble Performance Fee is $20.

* JUDGING : There will be two judges for each individual event. There will be no oral adjudication. Written critiques will be part of the evaluation process.
Ballots listing criteria for judging as follows. Ratings of 40-50 points = Superior; 30-39 points = Excellent; Under 29 points =Good.

*AWARDS : Contestants earning Superior or Excellent ratings will receive a certificate indicating the rating that he/she received. Students who receive a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ratings, according to point scale, will receive medals. There will be no ties for medals. Medals will go three deep in every category. There will only be 15 participants in the performance categories.

GENERAL INFORMATION

For all acting events:

  1. No costumes or theatrical makeup is allowed. Participants are encouraged to dress as they would for a general audition or job interview.
  2. No hand props should be used.
  3. All performance events have specific time limits. Judges will pay strict adherence to the time restrictions.
  4. Students and sponsors are encouraged to observe the Individual Events. Once the event starts, no one may enter the event room.
  5. Material must be drawn from published or original plays, screenplays or teleplays. Works from other forms; such as poetry, fiction and song lyrics, are not permitted.
  6. In duet or group scenes, each participant must be actively involved in the scene.
  7. Introductions should include the student's names, title of selections, and the names of the playwrights. The introduction is not included in your time limit of five minutes.
  8. Students may participate in no more than 2 Individual Events.
  9. Evaluation forms are available after the awards banquet and can be picked up by the sponsor.

MONOLOGUE - FEMALE - TWO CONTRASTING (Return To Events List)
EVENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Performed by one female actress, portraying only one character in each of the monologues.
  2. Selections must come from a play, screenplay, teleplay or monologue.
  3. The cutting should be memorized.
  4. To better display the actress' talents, the monologues should be contrasting.
  5. During the introduction the contestant must name the author/authors and source/sources from which the cutting/cuttings.
  6. No properties, costumes or stage make-up are permitted. Only one straight back chair is permitted, and will be provided by the host institution. Performance should be blocked for movement.
  7. A school may not enter a cutting from its Secondary Division play entry.
  8. TIME LIMIT: 5 minutes. (Does not include introduction.)
  9. ALL entries must be suitable for high school students, their school and community with regards to language and subject matter. Violation of this rule is grounds for disqualification.

MONOLOGUE - MALE - TWO CONTRASTING (Return To Events List)

DUET ACTING - DRAMATIC or COMEDIC EVENT REQUIREMENTS (Return To Events List)

  1. Performed by two actors, portraying two characters.
  2. Selection must come from a play, screenplay or teleplay.
  3. Selection should be as equally balanced between the two characters as possible. The cutting should be memorized.
  4. Scenes may be serious or humorous in nature or may contain elements which are both comedic and dramatic.
  5. During the introduction at least one of the actors must name the author and source from which the cutting was made.
  6. No properties, costumes or stage make-up are permitted. Only two straight back chairs are permitted, and will be provided by the host institution. Performance should be blocked for movement.
  7. TIME LIMIT: 5 minutes.
  8. ALL entries must be suitable for high school students, their school and community with regards to language and subject matter. Violation of this rule is grounds for disqualification.

SCENE PERFORMANCE - DRAMATIC OR COMEDIC (Return To Events List)

  1. Performed by three to five contestants, each actor portraying one character.
  2. Selection must come from a play, screenplay or teleplay.
  3. Selection should be as equally balanced between the all characters as much as possible.
  4. The cutting should be memorized.
  5. Scenes may be serious or humorous in nature or may contain elements which are both comedic and dramatic.
  6. During the introduction, at least one of the contestants must name the author and source from which the cutting was made. No properties, costumes or stage make-up are permitted. Only one table and three to five straight back chairs are permitted, and will be provided by the host institution. Performance should be blocked for movement.
  7. TIME LIMIT: 8 minutes.
  8. ALL entries must be suitable for high school students, their school and community with regards to language and subject matter. Violation of this rule is grounds for disqualification.

 

Solo Musical Theatre (Return To Events List)
EVENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Entrant must present one selection.
  2. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre or film. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or standard popular song lyrics are not permitted. The selection may contain dialogue.
  3. Performers may use pre-recorded, non-vocal musical accompaniment. A CD/cassette player will be provided. Performers are encouraged to bring their own CD player.
  4. The performance cannot exceed five (5) minutes. Time will start once the music begins after conclusion of the introduction.

Duet Musical Theatre (Return To Events List)
EVENT REQUIREMENTS

EVENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Performed by two actors, portraying two characters. The purpose is to encourage students to write well developed scenes.
  2. Selection must come from original work written by the actor/ actors performing in the event.
  3. Selection should be as equally balanced between the two characters as possible. The piece should be memorized.
  4. Scenes may be serious or humorous in nature or may contain elements which are both comedic and dramatic.
  5. During the introduction at least one of the actors must name the author and give the title of their piece.
  6. No properties, costumes or stage make-up are permitted. Only two straight back chairs are permitted, and will be provided by the host institution. Performance should be blocked for movement.
  7. TIME LIMIT: 5 minutes.
  8. ALL entries must be suitable for high school students, their school and community with regards to language and subject matter. Violation of this rule is grounds for disqualification.
  9. The actors performing in the original student written scenes should give the adjustors a written statement confirming that they wrote the piece themselves.

SCENE DESIGN (Return To Events List)
EVENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Matted color rendering(s) or scale model of scene design for a play. A maximum of six renderings for a multi-set show may be entered. However, the number of sets required for the production is not a criterion for judging. The matted renderings should be no smaller than 15" x 20", not larger than 20" x 30". Models should be painted to represent the appearance for the finished setting, and must be constructed at 1/4" = 1' or 1/2 = 1' scale. Base of models may not exceed 25 X 35 INCHES. Each item in the submission must be clearly marked with the contestant's name and school.
  2. A ground plan of the set(s) drawn to scale must be provided. The ground plan should show an understanding of normally accepted drafting conventions and symbols. The contestant's name and school should be clearly marked on the paper.
  3. A one page, typewritten statement of the designer's approach to the production should be included. The contestant's name and school should be clearly marked on the paper.
  4. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: ALL entries must be suitable for high school students, their school and community with regards to subject matter (play selection). Violation of this rule is grounds for disqualification. A signed statement from the instructor to the effect that the work is the original work of the student must be included with the designer's written statement.
  5. TIME LIMITS: All entries must be set up in the assigned room for adjudication at least thirty minutes before the first critique begins.
  6. DESIGN ENTRANTS: A student may choose to enter one design in each design event or only enter one event.

COSTUME DESIGN (Return To Events List)
EVENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Six to eight color renderings of costume designs for a play or musical. Each plate must be swatched. Plates should be no smaller than 10" x 15" and no larger than 15" x 20". Plates not rendered on board should be mounted on a rigid backing for ease of display and handling. Matting is optional. The design display should be clearly labeled to indicate the name of the play, the character, the scene, and should be clearly marked with the student's name and school. More than one costume may be shown on a single plate.
  2. Detailed drawings (not necessarily in color) of accessories such as shoes, wigs, hats, etc., for one of the rendered costumes. Student's name and school should be clearly marked.
  3. A one page, typewritten statement of the designer's approach to the production should be included. The contestant's name and school should be clearly marked on the paper.
  4. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: ALL entries must be suitable for high school students, their school and community with regards to subject matter (play selection). Violation of this rule is grounds for disqualification. Poster Publicity Design (Return To Events List)
EVENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. One poster design for a play or musical. Posters should be no smaller than 10" x 15" and no larger than 15" x 20".
