COMMUNITY THEATRE
INDIVIDUAL EVENTS FESTIVAL

Register Online

Eligibility:

  1. Every person who participates in the Community Theatre Individual Events Festival must be a member of MTA through payment of annual dues, as well as payment of $10 for each event slot entered.
  2. Students participating in the High School Individual Events Festival will not be eligible to participate in the Community Theatre Individual Events Festival.
  3. Each participant must fill out a Community Theatre Individual Events Registration form for each event entered.
  4. A participant may not enter more than two (2) events, e.g., Monologue Acting and Duet Acting and may not enter the same event more than once.
  5. Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony

The following events will be offered:

  1. Monologue(s) – One monologue or two contrasting pieces
  2. Duet Acting – Dramatic or Comedic
  3. Solo Musical
  4. Duet Musical
  5. Poster (note deadline for submission)
  6. Newsletter (note deadline for submission)

General Event Requirements:

  1. No costumes or theatrical makeup are allowed.
  2. No hand props should be used.
  3. All performance events have specific time limits.  Failure to adhere to time limits automatically disqualifies participant from a superior rating or any awards.
  4. Material must be drawn from published or original plays, screenplays or teleplays.  Works from other forms such as poetry or fiction are not permitted.
  5. In duets, each participant must be actively involved in the scene.
  6. Introductions should include the participant’s name(s), title of the selection(s), and name(s) of the author(s).  Time limit does not include the introduction.

Monologue Requirements: (Return To Events List)

  1. Performed by one actor or actress.  If performing two contrasting pieces, the participant may portray only one character in each of the contrasting monologues.
  2. Selection(s) must come from a play, screenplay, teleplay or monologue.
  3. Monologue(s) should be memorized.
  4. No properties, costumes or stage makeup are allowed.  Only one straight back chair is permitted for staging, which will be provided by the host theatre. 
  5. A participant may not enter a monologue which they also perform in an entered play for the Community Theatre festival.
  6. Time limit is five (5) minutes total (not including introduction).

Duet Acting Requirements: (Return To Events List)

  1. Performed by two (2) actors or actresses, portraying two (2) characters.
  2. Selection must come from a play, screenplay or teleplay.
  3. Selection should be as equally balanced between the two characters as possible.
  4. The cutting should be memorized.
  5. No properties, costumes or stage makeup are allowed.  Two straight back chairs are permitted, which will be provided by the host theatre.
  6. Participants may not enter a duet which they also perform in an entered play for the Community Theatre festival.
  7. Time limit is five (5) minutes (not including introduction).

Solo Musical Requirements: (Return To Events List)

  1. Participant may only present one selection.
  2. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre or film.  Works from other forms, such as poetry or standard popular songs are not permitted.  The selection may include dialogue.
  3. Performers may only use pre-recorded, non-vocal musical accompaniment.  A CD/cassette player will be provided.  However, participants are encouraged to bring their own player.  A piece may only be performed a capella if it is written to be performed in that manner.
  4. Time limit is five (5) minutes (not including spoken introduction).  Timing of the presentation will begin at the musical introduction.

Duet Musical Requirements: (Return To Events List)

  1. Participants may only present one selection.
  2. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre or film.  Works from other forms, such as poetry or standard popular songs are not permitted.  The selection may include dialogue.

Poster Design: (Return To Events List)

  • One poster design for a play or musical. Posters should be no smaller than 10" x 15" and no larger than 15" x 20".
  • Poster should be mounted on a rigid backing for ease of display and handling. Matting is optional. The design display must be clearly marked with the creator’s name and theatre.
  • The back must be labeled with the theatre name, address and creator’s name.
  • Work must be original work.  Pre-published or purchased posters cannot be used. 
  • Deadline:  Poster must be postmarked by January 6, 2009.

Newsletter Contest:  (Return To Events List)

  • The participating organization must be a group legitimately recognized by the state and/or the community for its contribution in promoting the arts.  (i.e. an individual may not submit a newsletter for a fictitious organization).
  • An organization may submit one newsletter.
  • Only newsletters created within the last two years are eligible.
  • Newletter must be postmarked by January 6, 2009.

Newsletter will be reviewed for:

  • Organizational Information (0 - 10 points each) [Theatre information present]
  • Content (0 - 15 points each)
  • Layout & Presentation (0 - 15 points each)
  • Overall Impression and usability (0-10 points)
