It has been years since MTA has been on the MS Gulf Coast; so MTA plans to have the festival in Gulfport and other locations in the area in January 2012. Ryan Pierini, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, is the local arrangements coordinator and will be working with theatres all across the Mississippi coast to host the theatre festival.
The last time we were on the coast was in 2004 when our main host site was Biloxi Middle School. This year we are fortunate to return to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jefferson Davis campus.
If you are interested in assisting with the local arrangements, please contact Ryan Pierini at ryan.pierini@mgccc.cc.ms.us or Tonya Hays at tshays777@aol.com. We appreciate Ryan and Tonya for taking on this responsibility and for bringing MTA back to the Mississippi coast. Mark your calendars for MTA 2012 – January 12-15, 2012.

Help us spread the word! Send it to your friends, post it to your facebook accounts and tweet about it.
Playwriting is a unique discipline. It gives a writer the hope of having his/her words realized by others – literally putting words into the hands of directors and the mouths of actors. It’s a truly collaborative art form, and one we’re proud to celebrate at the Mississippi Theatre Association festival. Since 2007, MTA has been issuing a call for original scripts by Mississippi playwrights.
Our competition has two divisions – a youth division, for students under the age of 18; and an adult division, for playwrights 18 and above. The winner of each of these two categories receives a staged reading at the annual MTA festival, including a response from an established playwright; free MTA festival registration – and a cash prize!
All Mississippi playwrights are encouraged to submit their one-act plays to this competition. We know you have stories to tell, and an important part in moving from page to stage is submitting your work. Share your scripts, and start weaving your words into the fabric of Mississippi’s rich literary tapestry! Submissions are accepted April 1-October 1; the winner will
be announced in December, with their work and award presented at the 2012 MTA festival in January 2012.
To submit your entry or review the entire rules, visit www.mtaonline.org and click on “Playwriting Competition.”

I wanted to share this story with the MTA family. Mackenzie Westmoreland who has attended MTA many times and co-wrote The Katrina Project that Hattiesburg High School brought to MTA and ultimately toured it around the county now. In this article he talks about living in New York and his passion for directing. He goes on to talk about how his life suddenly changed last August when he lost his eyesite. Now he is living in Tupelo and attending the REACH Center for the Blind to learn how to live his life and eventually return to theatre.
Take a few minutes to read this incredible story.

It is with great pleasure that the MTA Board of Directors announce the location of the 2011 Festival. The MSU Riley Center in Meridian, MS will serve as the location for the 2011 Festival being held over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend – January 13-16, 2011. The Riley Center will provide a wonderful opportunity for our theatres to showcase their works. This historic theatre often referred to as the Grand Opera House is simply breath taking. It offers an exquisite location and facility for a large portion of the MTA Festival. For more information about the Riley Center visit http://www.msurileycenter.com/

As part of a statewide effort to bring theatres, performers and arts supporters together, the Mississippi Theatre Association (MTA) is hosting a town hall meeting in Ocean Springs, MS on October 10, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at Ocean Springs High School.
“We invite all theatre and arts enthusiasts from all types of theatres including community theatres, schools, college and universities, and home school programs to attend the meeting to learn more about the services offered by the MTA,” said Stephen Cunetto, Executive Director, Mississippi Theatre Association. “We also want to hear how we are doing and how we can better serve your community, schools and organizations,” he added.
Hosted by Sandra Camphor, Ocean Spring High School, attendees will also learn more about the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Poetry Out Loud program. The Poetry Out Loud discussion will be led by the chair Ken Bolinsky.
The mission of MTA is to foster appreciation of and participation in youth, college, community, high school, professional, and university theatre in Mississippi by sponsoring festivals, workshops, and retreats; communicating with members and the public; acting as an advocate to government agencies, business, and the public; recognizing excellence in performance and production; and sanctioning representatives to regional festivals. The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency, funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Wallace Foundation, Donna & Jim Barksdale, The Phil Hardin Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation and other private sources. MAC is the official grants-making and service agency for the arts in Mississippi. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.

We are pleased to announce that we have released a new Calendar of Events for MTA Members! The difference between the old calendar and the new one is that in addition to allowing you to add your events to the overall MTA Calendar you will also have your own calendar for your theatre to use. We will host the software and you can use it to post your meetings, workshops, auditions, productions, etc. You’ll have your own login. You can add a link to your website to keep your members up-to-date with your events and when you submit your productions to your calendar you can also submit them to the MTA Calendar so that they appear on the MTA website. To see what it looks like visit the MTA calendar http://mta-online.org/calendarvt/?calendarid=default.
If you are interested in having a Calendar setup for your theatre – send an email to Stephen Cunetto at scunetto@gmail.com.

Does your theatre have something it wants to SELL?
Does your theatre have something that it would like to RENT or better yet LOAN to other theatres?
If so, you need to think about listing them on the MTA Swap & Sell site. This is another feature we have added to the website due to popular demand. This is a place where you can post information about sets, props, costumes, etc. that you want to sell or swap. If you have a set that you built and you want to make it available to other theatres, list it on our website. Be sure to visit it often to see if there is something on the site that you might need for your theatre. This will only be successful if you use it and promote it within your organization. Look for it in the LEFT menu.
